well as a scot i remember a few years ago when I went to Devon for a week, I tried to buy something from a shop with a bank of scotland £20, the woman behind the till had to shout on her supervisor, whom confirmed it was legal, then went on to laugh that it was like monopoly money, I didn't say the legal tender thing though, but I did feel totally humiliated as I was in a queue of people who seemed to be impatient. But I must admit in London I have never had a problem with any of my notes.
