What happened is the guy finds out he has a debilitating illness, so he fakes his entry into a university he was aiming for, to get an excuse to die away from his girlfriend who he doesn't want to suffer together with him during the short time he has remaining. As for the lyrics - They're about how much he misses her, and at the same time feels that maybe they should have never fallen in love since he doesn't want to see her sad.
